Keeping up with the fun ride that is my life, my computer apparently got hit by the Kernell Virus and the whole system is wiped. I am sending it to the computer store and hopefully they will be able to salvage something. Until then I have no laptop, and no way of doing anything. This sucks. I hate Virus makers. Hate them!

Its supposed to restore entire partitions and i know friend who used it to restore an entire windows system with it so give it a shot.

Ubuntu your laptop. You can try before you wipe your HD cause it’s not only an install CD it’s a live CD too.

Yes, Mac and Firefox.
I agree with 3,8,and 9…Get a Mac!! They don’t crah or get viruses (poo, poo).
Even a PC and Firefox. Or Opera – anything but IE.

Have other people had problems posting? I’ve had maybe 8 posts not published and a few that were posted but then removed! Anyway, thanks Sig, Marfoun and Karen, I thought I’d get tossed out with the trash from PC Windows fanatics. Macs cost a little more but you get what you pay for. People who trash them can never explain to me in engineering or rational terms why they don’t like them. If you own one then you know what I’m talking about. Pretty soon everyone will be able to run OSX regardless of make or model.
Some basic suggestions for people who want to improve their computer security:
* Only use IE when a web site absolutely will not run with any other browser. All browsers have security bugs, but IE is a train wreck waiting to happen.
Firefox and Opera are both free:

* ALWAYS run an antivirus program on the computer. Keep this up to date. Never let your subscription lapse.
* ALWAYS run a firewall between your computer and the internet. Never, ever connect to the internet without a firewall.
Choose a reputable vendor; for example, your antivirus program vendor may offer a firewall program. Or, you may want to look at a widely used, free “personal” firewall program, “ZoneAlarm,” whichis available from Zone Labs. You can find ZA at:

Click on “Home & Home Office” in the upper left corner.
Then click on “ZoneAlarm Product Comparison” in the upper right corner.
(There is a free service called “Shields Up!” at http://grc.com that can check whether your firewall is truly hiding your computer from attackers on the internet. You might want to check this out.)
* Don’t open email attachments from people you don’t recognize. Be paranoid about opening attachments even from people you DO know; verify “suspicious” messages before opening their attachments.
* If you use file sharing services, be very, very careful. Many viruses are probably spread this way.
* Linux and Mac are much less frequently targetted by viruses than Windows.
* Always keep your security patches up to date, regardless of what software you use.
I have mentioned a few free products that have pretty good reputations. You should not trust me, though. I cannot guarantee that these products are right for you, or even that they will run on your version of your operating system. You should do your homework and find products that will work best for you.
The suggestions listed here are basic. Once you have done these things, there are many other things you can do that will improve the security of your computer. Still, simply avoiding IE; keeping firewall, antivirus and operating system updates current; and being careful about email attachments and file sharing should improve your computer security by 100 times vs. someone who doesn’t do these basic things.
I really hope that these points were completely unnecessary for every person reading this comment. That would be good. 🙂
I run Zone Alarm, Norton, AVG, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, AdAware SE, Spybot S&D and CookieWall. Oddly enough, I have no problems on the Net.
uhe, in the last few days, I got a virus too, I can’t open one of my 2 computers, it says that I haven’t got enough memory… and it closes down

I’ve never heard of a single case of a virus infecting either in the wild, although people have published weaknesses which could (if not fixed) possibly allow viruses to be written.
The old Mac OS (pre OS X) did have viruses.
The obvious disadvantage of these OSes is that Windows can run at least ten times as many programs.

Ubuntu linux (which is what I’m posting from right now). Most of your windows software will run – under emulation – but you won’t need it. A choice of more than 10,000 free applications that install over broadband links. The only Windows program I use now is Final Draft, and that just installed right away from the CD. I interoperate with Windows/Office users without any issues at all.
It’s a no-brainer.
Switch to Mac. They tend to be more expensive here, but the money you save on set-up and chasing down Windows built-in compatibility problems alone will more than balance out the difference in prices. Also, I have had one (1) instance of successful virus attack in the last ten years. While I am careful with my email, I have a client who will download anything, and that was the route of infection: it came via a legitimate document from a known source. It’s not just that Mac viruses are rare: the software architecture is built to be robust, whereas any fool can write and spread a Windows virus. I get warnings about 3 or 4 times a year, but haven’t been affected. I run virus-protection software with automatic updates.
Main suggestion…don’t accept attachments from Twoset
Oh Sandmonkey, dump that pos masquerading as a computer and get a Mac! It’s sooooooooo much fun. Once you get one you’ll be hooked, and you won’t be able to stay away from it, but that’s cool. You’ll only have to be worried when you start calling it your Precious, LOL.

Kinzi, you’ll do great with a Mac! My hubby is in the “IT” profession, and when I told him I wanted to use his pc for stuff, he broke out into a cold sweat, began to experience the tremblings of massive panic, and started to contemplate suicide, but then as a light of hope dawned, he gasped out: “I’ll get her a Mac. She can’t go wrong with one of those.” LOL
If someone like me can get around great with a Mac, then so can anyone else! 🙂
Please, folks, stick with your Redmont products. Do not buy Macs. I want them to stay as they are: not spread enough to attract virus programmers.

I think I shall get my hubby offer me a Mac, till I am working for him free, he does owe me a jewel PC for my hobbies 🙂
