I will give it one thing: The show does make torture seem a bit normal and part of the day's (more like hour's) work. Whether or not some people can not differntiate between fact and fiction like 24, that is not the show's responsibility. Retarded people will always exist, and blaming their existance and behavior on the show they are imitating is clear and utter bullshit, otherwise we will have to cancel every drama there is on TV that may have some controversial elements in it that stupid people might imitate!
Or am I being a tad simplistic here?

Yeah, sorry dude, I’d like to agree with you but in this case you’re being a tad simplistic. The show shouldn’t be so blithe about torture.
I don’t think the show is that blithe about torture. Granted it takes place all the time on the show, but the show is designed to be the, “ticking-bomb” scenario in every episode. This suggests that it is used only when thousands of lives are at stake and time is off the essence. If it was used in different contexts like Jack Bauer investigating a murder, or random property crime, and then he started smashing knuckles to get the information he wanted I would agree that it treats torture blithely.

I think the point the writer is making is not that the show should be censored for the morally questionable acts of its lead character, but that the writer finds it distasteful that many conservatives applaud such tactics and refer to Jack Bauer in a wistful way in their own writings and statements. I’m reminded of General Turgidson in “Dr. Strangelove,” saying, “Gee I wish we had one of those” when told about the Russian Doomsday Machine which will destroy all life on the planet if triggered by an American attack on Russian soil.
A tad simplistic, yes, but not because the show will lead people to imitate Jack Bauer. What’s disturbing about 24 — or more specifically about its popularity — is that it reveals a large number of Americans now find torture acceptable, even entertaining. That can’t be a good sign in any society.

Love 24 and I don’t find torture acceptable in the real world. It’s so damn over the top that who in the hell would believe it? You cannot even watch it unless you can suspend your intellect for any length of time. It’s less about ‘hey let’s watch some torture’ and more about ‘hey, what ridiculous plot line are they going to introduce tonight?’

A few weeks ago, the three top interrogation officials in the US government (I believe two from the military and one from the CIA) flew to Hollywood unannounced and knocked on the producer’s door of 24.
They said stop using torture on that show, because we have people throughout our ranks asking ‘why we can’t do it, when it’s on 24.’
The exact wording can be verified, because the media covered the event. But clearly, the people in the government who deal with this, think the show is having an effect.
