..by having sex in the middle of the fastlane.
Now, it's not like I approve of or encourage that kind of behaviour, but…… They either know passion for each other so great that they just didn;t care about anything, or they are utterly shameless. I guess what I am trying to say is..I am jealous! Very Very jealous!
Welcome to the holy land under the Israelis not to mention gay parades etc….
twosret, congratulations. First comment and you’ve managed to make a snarky little story into an Indictment of Israel. Is there any story so trivial that nobody will bother to turn it into another datapoint backing up whatever the hell their view of the one side or another is? Can we say anything, anything at all, about Israelis or Palestinians without it turning into the same amazingly boring and fruitless debate we’ve had a thousand times?
And anyway, do you have a particular problem with gay parades?
Err, scratch the bile in that last comment of mine. I misread what twosret said. Instead, I’ll just stick to asking if s/he has any particular problem with Israeli gay parades.
Honor killings, stoning INNOCENT people to death, strapping on explosive laden garments and detonating them in crowded market places, a culture of death where children are encouraged to murder innocents as they commit suicide, a pathological belief that no matter what goes wrong in the world it’s Israel’s fault, welcome to the holy land under the Arabs not to mention belief that girls under the age of consent should be forcibly married off to God know’s what fate and beating them into submission if they don’t submit to God only knows what. Hey, I’ll take the Israeli model any day! Pretty lame Two’s!!
Ok, after tedders’s comment, now I feel free to roll my eyes and ask if there’s anything we can ever talk about re: Israelis or Palestinians without it turning into precisely the same old fruitless screaming match. Seriously, not everything needs to mushroom into a comprehensive indictment of Israeli Zionist Imperialist Stormtroopers or Palestinian Nihilist-Islamist Terrorist Culture of Death, or whatever. Grow up.
Tedders,
I agree!! Israel bashers should not complain about the sexual freedom and equality in Israel while ignoring the sexual repression and discrimination that exists in the neighbouring Arab countries. As if freedom and equality is a bad thing and homophobia and misogyny is a good thing.
That said, what the couple did is chutzpahdik 🙂
The fact that you rant about Egypt forever and bash it, gives me all the right to say what I say. Jewish women are not suffering from domestic violence? even in America they do and they can’t open their mouth.
Israel is the most terrorist state in the world and it’s actions is much worse than the Islamist terrorists extremists you are not any better my dear tedders.
What about the Israeli Gov. how many high rank officials are corrupt and under investigation. In Arabic we say el gamal mayshouf herdabto.
So stop your double standards, for over two years this blog is full of Egyptian haters who generalize about Arabs and verbally rape them.
I say what I want and if you don’t like it then shut it 🙂 or be sportif like us and move on and admit your country short comings 🙂
homais,
“And anyway, do you have a particular problem with gay parades?”
Yes I do and I’m a Christian and it is my right to object gays and gay parades. Call me what you want but it is not my life style and I don’t encourage it and in both the old and new testament my GOD is against it.
This is my belief and I don’t think that holy places of Jesus Christ should be celebrated by gay parades.
Got it?!
“And anyway, do you have a particular problem with gay parades?”
Yes I do. Mental illness is sad enough without celebrating it.
Twosret,
Thanks for bringing a smile to my face. For surely this is a twisted form for humor? Nobody can be this twisted and be for real at the same time?
Terrorism:
Twosret, calling Israel the most terrorist state in the world is simply ludicrous. Even if one accepts, as I do, that Israel sometimes does things that are not ethical, and that innocent Palestinians do get hurt by Israeli roadblocks, etc., the world contains states like the Sudan (which has murdered 300,000 innocent people in the last 3 years) and Syria (don’t get me started about Syria) and Burma and North Korea, all of which have murdered staggering numbers of innocent civilians and all of which have for decades executed reigns of terror that make Israel’s most draconian behavior look like kindly humanitarian assistance in comparison.
The myth you are promoting here was designed by the world’s most horrific monsters to draw attention away from their own truly appalling human rights records. They thank you for helping keep attention elsewhere, I am sure.
Jewish women:
Jewish women are afflicted by domestic violence in roughly the same proportions as the populations around them.
In Israel, of course, an adult woman (Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Druze, etc.) is NOT legally a minor, and can can leave her house without male relatives without being beaten by the police. This would be a challenge in certain Arab countries.
But since you have never come to the defense of Jewish women when terrorists blow them up in public buses, it’s clear that you don’t care about Jewish women, and are looking desparately for some imagined factoid to use against Israel.
Corruption:
I’ll be the 1st to admit that Israel suffers from corruption in government. However, the corruption level in Israel is lower (better) than that of every middle eastern country but the UAE, which passed Israel for the first time ever (well deserved congrats to the UAE) in Transparency International’s rankings. Egypt falls about 35 countries beneath Israel. Again, that’s not my opinion; it is the formal ranking (One of my favorite countries falls about 10 places behind Israel).
Egypt haters:
I don’t see a whole lot of “Egyptian haters” here. What I see is you spewing bile in response to a hilariously stupid news story, and other people responding to your sweet-natured nonsense in much the way they would respond to a child’s tantrum.
Gay parades:
I don’t particularly like gay parades either (nor do Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem). Nevertheless, as a free country that also allows lunatics like Raed Salah and evil bastards like Ahmed Tibi to hold demonstrations against the existence of the State of Israel itself, what you are seeing here is simply the fact that Israel allows freedom of expression to an extent not found anywhere else in the neighborhood. You and I may not like it, but even gay people have a right to express themselves if they are not actually creating danger for others. Be aware that if the holy places were held by the Palestinians, then extrapolating from their existing behavior in areas they do control, there WOULD be parades in the holy places: parades of violent Islamist partisans calling for the murder of whoever is the target of the day (Jews, Shia, Alawites, Bahaiis, Christians, or whomever). And such would have been much more offensive to Jesus, I think, than anything these gay guys are doing.
Conclusion:
If you are going to critique Israel, you might as well be truthful rather than hyperbolic. You might as well be consistent rather than complaining solely about Israel when its neighbors in the region are, in most of these areas, doing so much worse. As it is, your comments reflect rather poorly on you, and rather than convincing people of your points, you simply convince people that you are ignorant and full of hatred.
Regarding the article:
LMAO What do you think the police wrote on the traffic ticket?
Zvi…here the charge would be lewd and lacivious acts in public, along with indecent exposure. Don’t ask me how I know this, just know that I do.
What else would you expect from pigs and monkeys?
Wululululululu.
I used to think people hated Egypt until I realized they hated me. What a suprise.
Wulululululu.
Welcome to the holy land under the Israelis not to mention gay parades etc….
You’re an “Egyptian” “American” “Canadian”, huh?
Welcome to Egypt under the Egyptians.
And there are of course never any sexual offenses (or “offenses”) in America or Canada (or Muslim/Arab “holy” countries).
What’s it like being such a hateful hypocrite?
First thought:
“But officer, we’re not obstructing the flow! The flow was going really, really well, errrr, until, errrrr, you stopped us… .”
Second thought:
And I thought drivers talking on cell phones were a pain!
Ziv,
A typical response to an occupier oppressor who encourage terrorism and hate against Arabs and Muslims.
Why would you respond in length if I didn’t hit a nerve. If anyone is hateful it is you who defend occupation, oppression, and stealing land and on top of it killing innocent Palestinian civilians and shooting children in their heads.
Tell us Ziv about Jewish women and domestic violence do you want me to pull some Jewish links helping woman in America to talk and seek help from their Jewish partners?
Tell us about how many Palestinians died vs. Israelis since occupation. The real terrorists in Israel are the ones who justify the hate of not only Muslims but also Christians.
Tell us about how Israelis hate Christians. Want me to pull some news about Christian priests crying for help from prosecution under the Jews.
SoCalCrap,
Yeah some Christians can voice their freedom of expression and get some love from western Christian countries. Some Christians can say NO to gay parades and disagree with them.
If you don’t like it go and jump in your toilette and flush yourself 🙂
A touchy hateful hypocrite.
Ha!
Too funny.
If you don’t like it..
Well, as tempting as your advice is, I’m not going to have to turn it down.
Besides, I actually like how hypocritical and hateful you are.
It’s hysterical. Sadly, it’s very, very un-Christian behavior.
You made the baby Jesus cry.
“Welcome to Egypt under the Egyptians.”
In America a woman is sexually assaulted every 3 minutes and it is America under Americans. So if we follow your stupid logic what do we conclude.
We conclude that you are an idiot who thinks that any crime committed by a citizen of a country it means that ALL Egyptian including who rules them are sexual harassers.
What an idiot. I don’t know why I would reply to a freaking idiot like you.
Israel, I love you. In US I would’ve had my ass thrown in jail if only for a day just for starters.
Then there would be some kind of court and punishment. These guys got off just with the ticket.
On the other hand, they are stupid idiots who endangered lives of others and should be punished more severely. Israel, you are not perfect. Shame on you.
Twosret,
“I’m a Christian and it is my right to object gays and gay parades.”
Wrong. You have right not to like but you have no right to object it. You have no right to tell anyone how they should lead their lives.
Do you believe people have right to object you being Christian? Ever thought of it that way?
SoCalCrap,
You must be under 3 for sure. Next time I will give you a kosher chocolate chip cookie.
Leo,
Gays lead their life the way they want but if our children are not allowed to mention God in school. I don’t want my children to hear about mommy and mommy or daddy and daddy.
I don’t want to watch two guys kissing or two women playing with each others breasts in public.
Object me being a Christian as much as you want I don’t force you to live my way.
Gay parades are not the only way for them to be gays especially in Christian historic sites.
We conclude
By WE – you mean YOU.
And you’re only lashing out because you were busted as a hateful hypocrite.
You wouldn’t recognize irony if smacked you in your hateful, hypocritical behind.
You start of the thread with a hateful, gross generalization and lash out when people call you on it.
Too funny. It’s more sad, really. Pathetic.
And, impervious to irony, in the most juvenille manner possible, you change the name of a poster critical of your comment and accuse them of being 3 years old!
Again, just tragic. Classic.
Leo,
And why do you want to have sex in public? why do you want others to watch you? Does it make you a better lover? Is it really nice for your sex partner that she is naked in the street with all other men and women watching both of you?
Maybe it turns you on but we don’t want to watch you or her making out in public.
What a freak!
Go to bed it is late and I’m sick and tired of idiots.
We conclude that you are an idiot who thinks that any crime committed by a citizen of a country it means that ALL Egyptian including who rules them are sexual harassers.
Read your first comment. Please.
Damn, but you are a thick one.
Incredible.
WOW! I’m sure this is Exactly how God Envisioned the “HOLLY LAND” ….But hey thats what happens when people from “Other Cultures” move there! The Israeli jews who are from families that actually lived in “Palestine” before the invasion are the only ones left to defend the holly land!
You know Religious Israelis and Palestinians got together and were able to stop the Faggot Parade that was supposed to take place…Thank God!
Twosret,
I was going to answer to you, then I learned that I am an idiot who will never be able to have an intelligent conversation with you. I retreat with my tail behind my legs.
Good luck.
Justice for Palestinians! But not for Gays, eh. Is that how it works? Equality for some, but not for those whose lifestyle you don’t agree with? If you could rationalize the murder of civillians, I’m sure you could rationalize the homosexual lifestyle. After all what happens between 2 consenting adults doesn’t hurt anyone, unlike murderous suicide bombers. What HYPOCRITICAL LOSERS.
Twoset-
Everytime I have read you…you only have utterly moronic things to say…have not seen you post in awhile…thank goodness.
About the couple…well what do you expect with parking so expensive in Israel?
karen..Yes justice for Palestinians and not for Gays…how do you like That?
Put aside all your MODERN WORLD and its 2007 Feelings, and lets get back to Basics…meaning RELIGION..you know what that is? ok..
Judaism: Condems Homosexuality
Christianity: Condems Homosexuality
Islam: Condems Homosexuality.
Therefor God has condemd it, and i know these days its :silly: to listen to God or to Gods teachings to some of you people who are pro everything ….but guess what..God did forbid some things and we must abide by them! AND SPECIALLY IN THE HOLLY CITY!!
*Now go ahead and tell me how i’m a backward thinking anti-israeli terrorist!
No, I’m not going to say that. But I am SURE that you don’t agree with everything in the Jewish and Christian bibles (and probably the Koran too). I am SURE that you pick and choose what you like. And it is just plain wrong to condemn homosexuals. For all you know one of your children could turn out to be gay. Would you want people to beat and possibly murder your child just because of who they choose to love. THAT is wrong. If you don’t like the gay lifestyle, don’t be gay. If you don’t like the parades, don’t go watch them. But don’t deny them their dignity and right to live in peace and then scream about dignity and peace for Palestinians.
Modern Pharaoh, I don’t think Judaism, Christianity or Islam should be used as an example for anything. It’s old and I understand why people include it as part of their culture, but they have to be able to think as an adult would (religion or not). Why is it so hard for the big three to get along in the first place? You all have an imaginary friend who spent time in the same city.
Homo’s are as gay as you are straight. It is gross, your gods agree, but it isn’t as bad as your “back to basics” listen to what god says bullshit (it is worse on a level, but that isn’t public so you are worse). Please stay out of the “MODERN WORLD”, nobody wants you here.
Twosret, you’re pretty boring…
@Karen: Actually Yes i believe in Everything in the Quran, and alot in the Torah and Bible….and no i do not pick and choose what i like because There is no choosing when it comes to GOD’s Word. But again “hey its 2007 we have freedom of this and freedom of that…blah blah balh…woohoo the New Age, forget religion..its just a hoax, lets do whatever we want..yay” *Roll Eyes*
@Mikek: Just as i thought!! Just because i even Mentioned God your telling me to stay out of the Modern world! This shows how dispicable society, has become… The more God gives us the More we forget him…very sad! *i’m guilty of it too*
ps: to save you the comment, i am no religious Zealot, i’m just a normal guy! 🙂
Modern Pharoah, save the muslemgelical bullshit for someone else. You are not part of the modern world if you believe everything in the quran. I’m sorry, it isn’t going to happen for you. Btw, did muhomed mention dinosaurs? Do you believe in dinosaurs even if the quran doesn’t mention them?
p.s.: to save you the trouble, don’t try to claim modernity with your 6th century friend. It can’t and won’t happen and it would be best for everyone (muslims) if it does not become an issue. Now or ever.
@Twosret
Your knee-jerk reaction to a hilarious news story about your fellow human beings was to spew hate-filled BS, and your knee-jerk reaction to being called on some BS statements was to launch “canned” and ad hominem attacks against individuals and entire populations.
Nothing in your response provides any factual correction of any of my comments; you simply vent more bile and add more canned responses. Then you offer to provide anecdotes as “evidence.” Dear Twosret, while they may be emotionally stirring and may work in debates before naive audiences, anecdotes do not constitute proof that trends exist. Since you are claiming some very nasty trends, you will need to provide very clear evidence if you actually want to prove *anything.
* You imply that the Jewish religion raises the level domestic abuse. This claim that has no basis in fact.
* You claim that as a rule, Israelis hate Christians. In reality, Israel has very good relations with most branches of Christianity. The same is true of Jews in general.
Don’t waste your time.
Your comments about the Palestinians are irrelevant to my response to your claim about Israel. Go back and read what you said, and my response. Now consider Sudan, Syria, North Korea and Burma. Instead of letting your hatred for Israel blind you, take a very look at what these countries are doing to their own people. Would you REALLY prefer if Israel dropped all of its current policies toward the Palestinians and replaced them with the approaches that the governments of Sudan and Syria follow in dealing with their opponents? Would the Palestinians REALLY prefer that?
Not a chance.
You also make utterly farcical claims about me, personally, without knowing anything about my position is on a possible Palestinian state, Israeli human rights violations or any other topic. Ask about someone’s positions rather than making them up.
In general, your comments make you sound not only wilfully ignorant and deliberately closed-minded, but brimming with hatred, lacking a sense of humor and less interested in reality than you are in attacking Jews and Israelis.
@Mikek, No The Quran didn’t mention dinosaurs, why would the Quran, Bible or Torah talk about Dinosaurs? lets not even discuss this retarded point you brought up. I guess i’m just stuck in the 6th century and your more modern than Boy George himself! …
@ZVI: SHALOM!
@MP: Salaam aleikum!
I love this place… (sniff).. i love it so much… Two israelis gettin a good rogering in the middle of the highway and it ends up causing The “hypocrites” and “Idiots” to whip it out and see whos is bigger! G-D BLESS THE WEB (tear)
“Welcome to the holy land under the Israelis”
Twosret, shut up.
“But hey thats what happens when people from “Other Cultures” move there!”
Modern Pharaoh, your bias is showing again. Next time please try to avoid it. This way, I won’t have to mention the 800,000 Arab Jewish refugees who helped build this country. Or Jewish culture in general.
“The Israeli jews who are from families that actually lived in “Palestine” before the invasion are the only ones left to defend the holly land!”
The vast majority of religious Jews objected to the gay parade planned in Jerusalem. And most religious Jews don’t come from families who lived here before the “invasion” (which invasion, by the way? Arab of Israeli?). Nor were the vast majority of those protesting against the gay parade from families who were here before the “invasion”. Funnily enough, many were American yeshiva students who were only in Israel to study.
“You know Religious Israelis and Palestinians got together and were able to stop the Faggot Parade that was supposed to take place…Thank God!”
Yes. It would seem that we are only able unite in hatred. Is this a good sign or a bad one? I think a bad one.
And before you ask, I myself objected to the gay pride parade in Jerusalem, and quite vehemently when it was first planned to be a large international parade. The religious leaders in Jerusalem were willing to let the small, quiet parades slide before, because the harm from the violence in the protests would have been worse than anything a small, quiet parade would have caused. A large one they couldn’t stomach, it was too much. Nor could I.
And once the wave of objection started, it was impossible to stop it even when the parade became just a small one, as the ones before it. A compromise was reached, the protests that caused much more spiritual harm than the small gay parade stopped, and everyone went home with their pride partially intact.
“Yes justice for Palestinians and not for Gays…how do you like That?”
Do you prefer the Palestinian way to handle gays? Which is to say, a lynching?
I don’t. I don’t approve of homosexuality, but I won’t force another to stop being one. Why, you ask? Because it is a matter of free will, it is his choice, not mine. It may be a bad choice, and I may tell him that it is a bad choice, but it is still his choice to make, and it is he who will face whatever consequences God sees fit to make available in the afterlife, not me. I can’t make this choice for him, I don’t have a right to do this.
I can, on the other hand, object to his choice getting too much into my life, which is why the more sexually-minded gay pride parades are something I vehemently object to. If they can have one fully clothed, and as respectable individuals and not sex-crazed animals, then so much the better for all of us involved, me and them. They degrade themselves and anyone watching them when they bring in a truck full of transvestites.
And before you ask yet again, the previous Gay Pride marches in Jerusalem were apparently respectable. Which is to say, in clothing and not underwear and feathers at best. These parades ALL religious leaders in Jerusalem ignored, and wisely so.
Quite frankly, as a homosexual, I don’t care which of you “approves” of me and which of you does not. However, I am proud to be an Israeli and to live in a country that offers me freedom not to conceal my sexuality, or to live in fear of it, rather than in the country and society which some of you feel that the god who created me, intended for me.
FWIW, I was also against the proposed parade in Jerusalem because I thought that it was mere grandstanding and therefore inappropriate. Having read some of the comments here, though, I think I am now quite in favor of simply provoking some of you. Apparently we still do have reasons to protest.
Oh, and back on the topic of the original post – the couple were only charged with blocking a thoroughfare, not with indecent exposure, lewd behavior or any other crap that someone here suggested. Reuters didn’t report that, but the local press did.
Twosret is an intellectual child. She generalizes from single instances, and says “this is the broader society!”
What a joke!
Twosret, next time you attempt your juvenile thinking, I suggest you consider all the bull caca that regularly goes on around the world, which you regularly defend. “Oh, that’s not really Islam, Islam is a religion of peace! How dare you generalize from one instance! Oh, Egypt is really a peaceful place, how dare you generalize?!”
You are a hypocrite, tried and true. Not to mention a homophobe, for your comment about Israel’s gay parade.
Now, as far as this couple goes, they were irresponsible and shouldn’t have blocked traffic, but hey, at least they’re getting some!
Great story!
‘But I was looking for my spanner, Officer’
Of course – they’s be swinging from a crane by now in pretty much any of the Islamofreak neighbourhood countries…
The Zionist gang is in the house 🙂
And thus all criticism of Twosret is ignored, for the Zionist speaketh no truth with his forked tongue. *eyeroll*
Roman Kalik,
Shut up 🙂
hehe, if that’s make every one happy , send the homos to France (or California), they are not terrorised there, + they are part of our culture business, (mode, music, movies… etc) and they are refined people
For Twosret, Zionist is a codeword of JOOOOOOOO.
Can’t listen to what the JOOO has to say, because those dirty JOOOOOZ are the devil!
(except the self hating ones, of course)
With pleasure, Twosret. I have given up on rational dialogue with you.
@ Twosret
How did you deduce that I was a Zionist™ from my little joke? Are people not strung up on cranes in Islamic countries for what would be minor sexual misdemeanours anywhere else (not to mention obstructing the highway)? 😉
Speak up I can’t hear you….
.
Teeheehee!
You guys see, if there’s a smiley face after a gross proclamation of ones own ignorance, well then that makes it all right!
Pearls of wisdom from our own little purveyor of justice, our poster with a “messianic complex”, the one true believer who see’s all that is wrong with everything except anything, Twosret! :
Israel is the most terrorist state in the world….
I say what I want and if you don’t like it then shut it.
I’m a Christian and it is my right to object gays and gay parades.
A typical response to an occupier oppressor who encourage terrorism and hate against Arabs and Muslims.

We conclude that you are an idiot.
What an idiot. I don’t know why I would reply to a freaking idiot like you.

Go to bed it is late and I’m sick and tired of idiots.
The Zionist gang is in the house.
Shut up.
Sorry Twos, but you make it too easy. Might I politely inquire as to how old you are? How about if we let God decide who to punish when their judgment day arrives? Then maybe some groups that I won’t mention by name won’t feel the need to murder and destroy innocent citizens of free and sovereign nations just because the don’t see eye to eye on what, in the big picture, they agree on. You say that you have the “right” to believe in so and so and no one should force their beliefs on you. How about you afford the same respect on others! Not a difficult concept to grasp. Before you dismiss this a another plot by an Arab hating queer Jewish Zionist conspirator, let it be known that I am neither homosexual nor Jewish or an Arab hater. Heck I really like (not in a gay way) Sandmonkey, I am a Christain as you claim to be but the Jesus I know is probably not the same one you claim. I do agree with you on more points than you probably realize. I don’t believe in “gay parades” any more than I agree to “pedophilia parades” or “bestiality parades” or for that matter any parade that society wouldn’t feel was proper for an elementary school student to see. With that said, what consenting adults do behind closed doors is none of mine or your business, hell I don’t even want to think about it. In my opinion all the people who chose the gay lifestyle and then wear it on their shoulder in an attempt to make it seem normal are doing quite the opposite (just my two cents worth). I believe that all of the Abrahamic faiths worship a common God. They have the same stories, parables and core moral and ethics codes, all of them have needed toning down as mankind has grown and matured, (they were written thousands of years ago, humanity and its ability to deal with societal problems have grown) all of them at some time have been maligned and perverted by criminally insane people who prey on weaker individuals to do their sinful bidding. You hate Israel but won’t come out and say it directly, that’s biased and wrong. If all the Islamic militants threw away their weapons, peace would break out in the middle east, if Israel threw away all her weapons, within a few hours the world would see the biggest genocide in the history of the world. That’s a fact you don’t deal with on an equal footing with all the other problems in the world and that region. The Arab culture is a deep, wonderful, hospitable and beautiful culture but they are not without blame in the current conflagration that is the modern middle east. Ask Sandmonkey, I’m sure he has a plethora of suggestions that would make a positive impact in the region. I’m pretty sure he’s not a queer Jew that hates Arabs and Muslim people. : )
By the way, youv’e got to let me in on how to use those cute little smiley faces you use so ubiquitously at the end of your posts! Thanks!!!
Oh, wow….
Remember the Sex for Peace day?
I’m really starting to see it’s appeal:)
Ok, while I’m no huge fan of homos, I definitely am not interested in stoning/lynching/beheading them.
And while the three major religions do condemn homosexuality, the SHEER AND UTTER hatred of homosexuality in the Arab/Muslim culture is hilarous to me…and you’ll see why in a second.
NOW, here’s the kicker…
Read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pederasty_in_the_Islamic_world
Would you like a paraphrase?
“The practice of pederasty in the Muslim world seems to have begun, according to surviving records, sometime during the 800s and ended, at least as an open practice, in the mid-19th century. Throughout this era, pederastic relationships, poetry, art and spirituality were found throughout Muslim cultures from Moorish Spain to Northern India. The forms of this pederasty ranged from the chaste and spiritual adoration of youths at one extreme, to the violent and forcible use of unwilling boys at other. While sodomy was considered a major sin, other aspects of same-sex relations were not, though they were problematized to various degrees at various times and places.”
and my favorite bit:
“Islam has been another force shaping the ways in which same-sex love is understood and practiced in the Middle East. The valorization of youthful male beauty is found in the Qur’an itself: “And there shall wait on them [the Muslim men] young boys of their own, as fair as virgin pearls.” (Qur’an 52:24; 56:17; 76:19). Islamic jurisprudence generally considers that attraction towards beautiful youths is normal and natural. The Hanbalite jurist Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 1200) is reputed to have said that “He who claims that he experiences no desire when looking at beautiful boys or youths is a liar, and if we could believe him he would be an animal, and not a human being.” [8] However, anal intercourse (liwat), is proscribed and men are advised to be even more wary of attraction to beautiful boys than to beautiful women, through religious injunctions exhorting them to resist this temptation. It is related that the Prophet Muhammad enjoined his followers to “Beware of beardless youth for they are a greater source of mischief than young maidens.” [9]”
So, your Messenger of God, Muhammad (peace and good tidings be upon him) told his followers to “beware of beardless youth for they are a greater source of mischielf than young maidens?” This is ACTUALLY in the koran?!
HUH????????????? Your prophet found little boys tempting to his loins – even more so than little girls (and we all know what happened to poor little Aisha)??? WTF?! You’d be slapped in prison these days for wanting to touch a LITTLE boy OR girl…instead you guys made Muhammad (peace and good tidings be upon him) a prophet. It all makes me laugh when I see how much intolerance there is in the Arab world towards fags (besides, jews, christians, bahai’i, Israeli’s, America, the West and so on)
Amazing, I mean, hypocritical, isn’t it?
Twosret – You’re a fuckin’ retard! And the craziest thing is that you’re not even an Arab, let alone a moozie!!!! Unfortuantely, it looks like you’re years in Egypt have Arabized you 🙁 A BIG problem in Egypt these days.
Sorry, here’s another gem from the above article about how prevalent homosexuality is/was. I wonder if people will tell me this is not “true Islam?” Since I hear that same fucking excuse every time. But you know what, this IS true Islam as these were the methods of muslims shortly after Muhammad was around.
“At the other extreme, non-sublimated pederastic relationships were widespread, and widely documented in the poetry and art of the cultures involved, including in The Book of One Thousand and One Nights. Libertine poets such as the Baghdad poet Abu Nuwas (750?–813?) flaunted their sexual conquests, often Christian wine boys, some of whom they plied with wine in order to subdue. [12] While some of these poems appear to describe affectionate relationships, others are clear depictions of rape, as is this quatrain by Mamayah al-Rumi:
The art of liwat is the way of masculinity and might
So leave Laylah to Majnun, and Azzah with Kuthayyir,
And go up to every beardless boy, strip him, and even if he cries,
Present him with your prick and fuck him by force. [13]
In order for any such act, whether willing or not, to be a punishable offense one had to consummate it and be caught at it, which required witnesses of four men or eight women. If one was not caught at it, however, it was thought that one would still be punished in the fires of hell.

Are people (especially muslims) even aware of this? I mean getting a little *Christian* boy drunk and then raping him….beautiful, isn’t it?
Cheap wine $6.99
Desert tent $74.98
getting a little *Christian* boy drunk and then raping him….Priceless!!!!
Sorry, couldn’t resist!! ROFLOL!!
Modern Pharaoh Says:”Actually Yes i believe in Everything in the Quran, and alot in the Torah and Bible….and no i do not pick and choose what i like because There is no choosing when it comes to GOD’s Word. But again “hey its 2007 we have freedom of this and freedom of that…blah blah balh…woohoo the New Age, forget religion..its just a hoax, lets do whatever we want..yay” *Roll Eyes*”
Really? So you believe the Earth is flat, the Sun goes around the Earth, Moses, Muhammed, some Egyptians. Abraham and Aaron were all the first Muslim?
I have an easy one for you. The Quran says that Muhammed was sent to a people who had never been sent a Messenger before (28:46, 32:3, 34:44, 36:2-6). On the other hand the Quran says that Abraham and Ishmael were in Mecca and built the Kaba (2:125-129) and that God has sent Messengers to all peoples before (10:47, 16:35-36, 35:24). So without picking and choosing what you believe, which of these claims do you believe? Arabs are not the descendants of Ishmael?
Anonymused Says:”So, your Messenger of God, Muhammad (peace and good tidings be upon him) told his followers to “beware of beardless youth for they are a greater source of mischielf than young maidens?” This is ACTUALLY in the koran?!”
Well it is unlikely. It is probably in the aHadith – the collections of saying by Muhammed. Not the Quran. I’d look for it but I can’t be bothered frankly.
Besides, Muhammed had a much more civilised approach to homosexuals than later Muslims. From the Sunan Abu Dawud Book 32, Number 4095:
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin:
“A mukhannath used to enter upon the wives of Prophet (pbuh). They (the people) counted him among those who were free of physical needs. One day the Prophet (pbuh) entered upon us when he was with one of his wives, and was describing the qualities of a woman, saying: When she comes forward, she comes forward with four (folds in her stomach), and when she goes backward, she goes backward with eight (folds in her stomach). The Prophet (pbuh) said: Do I not see that this (man) knows what here lies. Then they (the wives) observed veil from him.”
A mukhannath literally means a defective person. What was this man’s defect? Well Muslims usually translate that these days as “eunuch” but also as “an effeminate man”. For instance, from the Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 162:
Narrated Um Salama:
that while the Prophet was with her, there was an effeminate man in the house. The effeminate man said to Um Salama’s brother, ‘Abdullah bin Abi Umaiyya, “If Allah should make you conquer Ta’if tomorrow, I recommend that you take the daughter of Ghailan (in marriage) for (she is so fat) that she shows four folds of flesh when facing you and eight when she turns her back.” Thereupon the Prophet said (to us), “This (effeminate man) should not enter upon you (anymore).”
Similar Hadith are recorded in Sahih Bukhari 5.059.613, Sahih Muslim 26.5415 and 26.5416 and of special relevance to North African Muslims, Malik’s Muwatta 37.37.6.5.
Notice what is going on here – Muhammed has allowed a “defective” man to visit his wives without them wearing the veil. When this “defective” man offers to point out a woman from Taif who would be a good sex slave for another man, Muhammed realises he is not defective – he has an eye for a pretty girl (and incidentally shows Arabs have not changed much) and as such his wives have to obey the same rules as for any other man.
So what else do we know about these “defective men”? Well the term appears once more in Abu Dawud, Book 41, Number 4910:
Narrated AbuHurayrah:
A hermaphrodite (mukhannath) who had dyed his hands and feet with henna was brought to the Prophet (pbuh). He asked: What is the matter with this man? He was told: Apostle of Allah! he affects women’s get-up. So he ordered regarding him and he was banished to an-Naqi’. The people said: Apostle of Allah! should we not kill him? He said: I have been prohibited from killing people who pray. AbuUsamah said: Naqi’ is a region near Medina and not a Baqi’.
So it turns out that this mukhannath liked dressing as a woman. I mean you have 1. effeminate, 2. not interested in women, 3. dressed in women’s clothes. I hate to engage in gay stereotyping, but what more do you want – tickets to a Liza Minelli concert? Clearly there were gay men in Muhammed’s time and clearly they were not killed. Muhammed simply exiled him to al-Naqi which was hardly a punishment given it was near Medina.
Modern Pharoah,
You are actually trying to talk sense to this crowd? Good luck man! Many of those are on this blog to cheer anything wrong about Egypt, Arabs, or Muslims. They are dedicated Zionists and live on Egyptian blogs like Sandmonkey and Big Pharoah.
I don’t know some of them as I stopped commenting often here but I do know the old farts who lives here and on Big Pharoah blog and rejoice with any bit of negative news about the Middle East.
Someone like you or Ramy will be waisting their time replying to every message of the Anti-Arab group.
Let them vent their hate against Islam, Arabs, and Egyptians as much as they want. It only goes to show who are the real haters.
Twosret said: “Let them vent their hate against Islam, Arabs, and Egyptians as much as they want. It only goes to show who are the real haters.”
I’ll ask again, are you (or do you consider yourself) Muslim, Christian, Arab, Palestinian or Egyptian??
You CAN’T be all of them so which one is it? I definitely know you don’t consider youself Israeli or Jewish because of your deep deep hatred for them…but you sound like a rabbid muslim fundementalists which MAKE ZERO FUCKING SENSE TO ME!
You HAVE been Arabized, huh? You’ve been Arabized to the fucking core! You make me wanna puke!
Anonymoused,
Are you the father of Anna Nicole Smith baby?
Nope…but I wouldn’t mind it. Especially if was the old ‘Guess’ version of Anna Nicole Smith.
Now, here’s my question to you, are you a fucking RETARD? No, seriously!
And why don’t you answer my question Twosret?
Sorry that was my post above…slight difference.
…did Twosret just say that folks here just lurk and wait to bash Islam/Arabs/Egyptians? On *this* topic? Where everyone can see the first replx?
Oh dear. I have never quite understood what “pot calling the kettle black” meant until now.
Yes, Twosret, some people who post here hold stereotyped and biased views on Arabs and Islam. But when the accusation comes from you it’s just sad, as is this bid to gather support and alianate between people you think are like you and the people you blindly detest.
Roman Kalik,
Just play nice and don’t get too upset about my comments. I think you might end up with a stroke if you take it too seriously 🙂
Anonymoused,
You are cute
I have a feeling Leo has a hiccup.
hold on a second what do u have to say about syria mr. zvi??
Okay, let’s get to what really matters, did Israeli traffic cams record this and,if so, how soon do we get to enjoy it on YouTube?
I thank you for your concern, Twosret, but really one doesn’t usually have strokes at my age.
And coming from someone who once threatened to sue another person over replies on blogs, this really *is* amusing. Your worst enemy is memory, Two. Other people’s.
Roman Kalik,
Let me refresh your short memory. I never threatened anyone over the internet. After many vicious attacks (and I mean vicious) I posted a legal note provided by my lawyer over death threats directed at me. American man who owns guns as per his girlfriend and threatened to kill me on two different occasions is not to be taken lightly.
If you threaten to kill me or abduct my children if I post again, I will drag your lovely Jewish Kosher Ass to court and report you to authorities.
You don’t know the whole story so I advice you to keep your short sight observation to yourself and mind your own business. Big difference between someone posting a death threat and some idiots calling me stupid or silly names.
Easy does it, and if you don’t like my posts you can scroll down. A feature on the internet that can make you avoid people who you want to shut up.
@Tedders: Were waiting for another Essay!
@Heigou: The Quran never said the earth was flat..you moron, also the Quran talks about things that we never discovered till later in life when science was able to find them! Anyways were not here to discuss the Quran. You need to do research before you talk , bucause frankly you sound like a misinformed moron!
@Tworset: You are rite, no sense in arguing with this GANG, They remind me of arguing with the OTHER SIDE such as the idiot Extremists and Fundementalists….Same way of arguing!
..
Modern Pharoah,
Exactly..I have said it all along. This is why I end up joking around at the end because there is no way you can converse with people like them. I mean seriously look at them jumping up and down over one sentence I made.
Zillion comments were made against Egypt and it’s people that are so ignorant and full of lies but if you say one sentence the Zionist Jihadis will send you to hell.
A taste of their own medicine is necessary sometimes to watch them shout we are the ZIONIST JIHADI’S LONG LIVE ISRAEL.
Leo,
I see you peekaboo!
MP says:
@Tedders: Were waiting for another Essay!
Ah jeesh, flattery, flattery, my head is beginning to swell, I feel the same about you Modern Pharoah!! Lets all just agree to disagree, Okay?
Hey Twos, I’m, serious about the little yellow smiley faces, enlighten me!!
Twosret, give it up. Shlemazl NEVER issued a death threat to you. Neither did anyone on his site. Rather, your blood libels about Jews were exposed to the world, and then you said these were “vicious attacks.”
Play the pity party somewhere else. No one who knows what happened is buying it.
Hypocrite doesn’t even begin to describe you.
Tedders,
You can figure it out. Look at your keyboard. Now push colon and the bracket that looks like a smile (or frown). And tah dah….you have a smiley face 🙂
Be sure to leave a space between your smile and the letter before it though.
Modern Pharaoh,
Do not pay much attention to it.
I am getting old and need to remember where I left off.
@tedders: #57 is pretty offensive, wouldn’t you say? It amounts to a nasty “blood libel” against Bedouin Arabs (many of whom are nomadic, and therefore live in tents), pretending that they have some crazy propensity for raping Christian kids. There is no such trend, and I certainly do not find such a characterization to be funny.
@MP: #72: Twosret is referring to me, among others. I don’t believe that I constitute a GANG, nor do I believe that my comments or arguments resemble those of fundamentalists. Twosret is unable to respond sensibly to my comments, so she responds with personal attacks. You’re too smart to let her rope you into that.
@anwar, hi. #68: First let me note that I have nothing against Syrian people. However, the Syrian *government* is a collection of bloody-handed gangsters which, now that Saddam’s Baath party is no longer in power, is almost unmatched among middle eastern governments for terrorism (it comes in #2, behind the actively genocidal Sudanese regime).
Among other exploits, I condemn the Syrian government for the massacre of 10,000s of innocent people in a week at Hama. I condemn them for their behavior in Lebanon and for their use of terrorism and thuggery to undermine and threaten every single one of their neighbors (Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon and even the PA have traced some of the bloodiest terrorist attacks that have occurred in their territories back to Damascus). The Iraqi defense minister has called the Syrian border “the gate of darkness” due to the flow of terrorists and terror weapons from that direction. The Jordanians fingered Syria as the source of the Amman bombs. The Israelis and the Palestinians both trace truce-busting terrorist bombings back to Damascus, and whenever there is a particularly calm Israel-PA truce, Syria’s most active clients in the PIJ are the ones who destroy it. The Turks finally forced Syria to expel the PKK from Damascus. Good move. And the Lebanese March 14th coalition can tell you much more about Syria than I ever will.
Syria also has the power to officially deed the Shebaa to Lebanon, thereby ending the [pretext for] violence between Lebanon and its southern neighbor, and thereby establish the moral high ground in peace talks – but of course refuses to do so. Among other things, the Syrian government does not want to create physical evidence that it views Lebanon as other than a Syrian province.
I’m a fan of the Lebanese, generally, and the Syrian government’s insistence on using Lebanon as a proxy battlefield pisses me off.
Meanwhile, inside of Syria itself, I find that the faked suicide of Ghazi Kanaan provides a good example of the brutality and stupidity of the regime with regard to its own people. I find Syria’s obviously staged “terrorist attacks” against empty buildings to be a joke. I find Syria’s obviously staged “intercepted weapons Iraqi bound for Christians in Tripoli” to be ludicrous. I find Syrian propaganda as a whole to be both cynical and conscienceless, and the spokesmen for the regime over time become pathological liars. And boring ones, to boot; every problem in the world is caused by the Jews.
Since Syria is a closed regime, a dictatorship in which freedom of speech is not permitted, and since the Syrian state is not as open or advanced as many other states in the region, I know more about the regime’s foreign policy than about day to day life under the regime.
On the positive side, the regime has, for good reason, refrained from oppressing its religious minorities much more than it oppresses everybody else. It is not an Islamist government. That is a plus. But considering that it is a Baathist government, it is a rather small plus.
There are worse regimes than the Syrian government in the world today – the murderous Sudanese government and the government of North Korea come to mind – but Syria’s regime is one of the worst.
There are Syrians who envisage a very different government for Syria. But they are not the members of the junta. They have to be very careful; Syria plays by “Hama rules,” and does its best to make sure that everyone remembers that.
(I hope that helped)
Zvi,
To your opinion, why Israel did not hit Syria in the summer?
From my afar it looks like very logical step.
If I am correct, two countries are in the state of war so not even declaration of war is necessary.
Zvi says:

Yes, yes, yes! Pretty offensive and uncalled for! Really not funny but at the time, When reading post #55 and # 56 from Anonymused about “Are people (especially muslims) even aware of this? I mean getting a little *Christian* boy drunk and then raping him….beautiful, isn’t it?” I think it was the “beautiful” part that reminded me of “pricless” commercials for some major credit card company here awhile back. I got tickled and posted before I really thought it out. I apologise for anyone who took offensive, I was trying to be funny and lighten the mood alittle bit. I wasn’t implying that all Muslims exhibit such behavior. I’m sure that the same percentage of pediphiles in moderrn society is relatively constant throughout all the Abrahamic faiths. Everyone is so black or white at times on this post, here’s a link that was in the BBC today that may show a little light at the end of the tunnel ,maybe a little hope for the good of mankind. Well except for Indonesia, what’s up with those dopes? Here’s the link:

Sorry if the post is a little short for your likes Modern Pharaoh, I’ll try to do more research in preparation for my next posting ; ) Oh, duh Karen, like I can’t do those inferior smiley faces! Here’s an Elvis face 5; 0 nice hair don’t you think!! LOL I’m talking about those cute little happy, sad, smirkey YELLOW smiley faces Twosret uses after most of her posts. You know like, “The Zionist gang is in the house” and then a smiley face! Kinda like a “Southern lady” saying “God bless your heart”, you know what she really means is “Go F–k yourself”. Duplicitous yet to the point, don’t you think?
🙂 ;( 🙁 😉
just a test only a test
🙂 hey cool 🙂 I get it finally 🙂
….maybe she was ovulating!
Not that difficult is it Tedders? That is all it took. Just doing the inferior smiley faces correctly. DUH, DUH, DUH you moron. Oh, and by the way…YOUR WELCOME!!!!
“Tell us about how Israelis hate Christians. Want me to pull some news about Christian priests crying for help from prosecution under the Jews.”
Funny!!!!! I want to video of priests crying because the Jews are being mean to them…I love this one Twoset…really…tops!!!
@leo #81:
I suspect that Israel did not want to open up a second battle front. Given the incredible ineptitude of Olmert and Peretz, it was probably wiser for them not to do so. Warfare is always unpredictable, and should never be lightly undertaken.
Syria is armed much more heavily than Hizballah, with armored forces and many more powerful rockets (SCUDs as well as Katyushas). Syria can hold Israel’s cities hostage, and has done so.
This is, in fact, the trademark style of the Syrian junta: their crimes take place in other countries, using proxy forces that hide behind civilians. I despise the Assad regime for their abuse of their neighbors. They leave a trail of bloody slime behind them wherever they go.
Should the Israelis have attacked the Syrian military?
Only if there were very good reasons to think that it would change Syria’s behavior for the better.
Man, we’ve come a long way from a couple of horny Israelis blocking traffic while shagging in a car.
LOL
I love how all you guys have turned into Political Analysts all of a sudden!!

The Quran manifestly says the Earth is flat and I would ask you to find one single Arabic dictionary or translation before about 1950 that says otherwise. The fact that Muslims have invented a “better” translation simply proves the dishonesty of the “accepting the Quran” case. When in doubt, Muslims change the meaning as they like. The Quran does not, anywhere, talk about things that were not discovered until later. Or at least if it does, it hardly matters as it took Western scientists to discover those things and Western hacks to point it out to the Muslims.
I notice you did not answer my question – who was the first Messenger sent to the Arabs? Muhammed, Abraham, Ishamel? Who?
I have another for you too – the Muslim calendar suppressed the Ruan month – the inter-calendary month. As all lunar calendars are out by 5 or so days a year, you have to insert an extra month every now and then. As the pagans did. Islam suppressed this making sure that the lunar calendar would never work. Which means poor tax payers had to pay tax months apart from when their crops were ripe. This is a backwards step. Why didn’t God tell Muhammed to use a solar calendar?
Modern Pharoah #90, that would be Twosret, in her first comment.
Thanks Karen 🙂
Zvi @ 88
Thank you very much for your answer.
You’re welcome again, Tedders 🙂
@Hiegou: i swear to God your taking Stupid pills, or you just like talking out of your ass!! The Quran never said the earth was flat (quran is in Arabic not English) and the first messenger sent to us was Abraham!!!!
Your probably have no religion anyways so discussing religion with an athiest is a waste of time
Modern Pharaoh Says:”i swear to God your taking Stupid pills, or you just like talking out of your ass!! The Quran never said the earth was flat (quran is in Arabic not English) and the first messenger sent to us was Abraham!!!!

Yep, I;ve been taking stupid pills. And still proving I know more about Islam than you. Aren’t you ashamed?
The Quran does say the Earth is flat. Repeatedly. My favorite example is when Alexander the Great comes to the edge of the world. But it implies it in other parts.
The first messenger sent to the Arabs was Abraham was he? Funny because the Quran disagrees:
028.046
YUSUFALI: Nor wast thou at the side of (the Mountain of) Tur when we called (to Moses). Yet (art thou sent) as Mercy from thy Lord, to give warning to a people to whom no warner had come before thee: in order that they may receive admonition.
PICKTHAL: And thou was not beside the Mount when We did call; but (the knowledge of it is) a mercy from thy Lord that thou mayst warn a folk unto whom no warner came before thee, that haply they may give heed.
SHAKIR: And you were not on this side of the mountain when We called, but a mercy from your Lord that you may warn a people to whom no warner came before you, that they may be mindful.
032.003
YUSUFALI: Or do they say, “He has forged it”? Nay, it is the Truth from thy Lord, that thou mayest admonish a people to whom no warner has come before thee: in order that they may receive guidance.
PICKTHAL: Or say they: He hath invented it? Nay, but it is the Truth from thy Lord, that thou mayst warn a folk to whom no warner came before thee, that haply they may walk aright.
SHAKIR: Or do they say: He has forged it? Nay! it is the truth from your Lord that you may warn a people to whom no warner has come before you, that they may follow the right direction.
034.044
YUSUFALI: But We had not given them Books which they could study, nor sent messengers to them before thee as Warners.
PICKTHAL: And We have given them no scriptures which they study, nor sent We unto them, before thee, any warner.
SHAKIR: And We have not given them any books which they read, nor did We send to them before you a warner.
036.002
YUSUFALI: By the Qur’an, full of Wisdom,-
PICKTHAL: By the wise Qur’an,
SHAKIR: I swear by the Quran full of wisdom
036.003
YUSUFALI: Thou art indeed one of the messengers,
PICKTHAL: Lo! thou art of those sent
SHAKIR: Most surely you are one of the messengers
036.004
YUSUFALI: On a Straight Way.
PICKTHAL: On a straight path,
SHAKIR: On a right way.
036.005
YUSUFALI: It is a Revelation sent down by (Him), the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
PICKTHAL: A revelation of the Mighty, the Merciful,
SHAKIR: A revelation of the Mighty, the Merciful.
036.006
YUSUFALI: In order that thou mayest admonish a people, whose fathers had received no admonition, and who therefore remain heedless (of the Signs of Allah).
PICKTHAL: That thou mayst warn a folk whose fathers were not warned, so they are heedless.
SHAKIR: That you may warn a people whose fathers were not warned, so they are heedless.
So you accept that Muhammed was the first “warner” sent to the Quraysh?
Oh and by the way, why do you think it is pointless to discuss religion with an atheist? You have to be a member of *a* club before you can discuss your club?
@MP #90 LOL I’m guilty.
HeiGou, about the Alexander thing.
You do realize that you are taking a mytho-literalist interpetation here, right? By taking such interpetations to the exclusion of all others, you end up supporting the views of mytho-literalist Muslims. You know, extremist kind. You are basically saying that extreme and dumb interpetations are the only ones Muslims make. And call any Muslim who says otherwise ignorant.
Which, quite frankly, is stupid.
Joan @13,
Very, very funny.
yeah it helped lol its just bashar looks so civilized i dont think he has all the power.
Anwar, I think you’re right. My guess is that the bigwigs from his father’s days have a fair deal of power, but I also believe that Bashar is the one who decided on destabilizing Lebanon, among other things. He’s living in his father’s shadow, and that’s not good. It means he has to live up to all he inherited, including mass-murder.
Bashar was never meant to rule. And it shows. And he knows that it shows, which makes him more bitter and more dangerous.
My God,
Here we go again. A light hearted story is turned into a politicaly charged debate…. AGAIN ..
Roman Kalik Says:”HeiGou, about the Alexander thing. You do realize that you are taking a mytho-literalist interpetation here, right? I am doing no such thing. Modern Pharoah claims to believe everything the Quran says. I am asking him what exactly that entails. If he takes it literally, what is that got to do with me? Certainly not my fault. I am also not taking any interpretation any way at all. I have not yet expressed a single opinion on the subject. Nor doubt I will.
@anwar 102: Yeah, he really does look civilized. When he came to power, many people thought that, having lived in the UK for a long time, he might allow more free speech, etc. and become a more enlightened despot than Syria had had for years. There is some evidence that he toyed with this idea himself at first – but not for long.
Unfortunately, there are too many cases in which he has told people that he would kill them, or break them, or whatever. Sadly, he’s a thug.
I think I can understand something of his position. He knows that if he is perceived as being “weak,” then the people around him will simply assassinate him and take over. In a junta like the one in Syria, being weak is as simple as failing to murder one’s political opponents, “giving in” to western pressure, etc. Ghazi Kanaan was evidently perceived to be weak.
If Assad simply resigns, I suspect that the junta will immediately name him responsible for the Hariri assassination and other crimes, then stage a “suicide” or an execution to make sure that he doesn’t take anyone else down with him or intrigue with others against his successor.
As for the other members of the junta, these people know that if the junta falls, they will almost certainly be arrested and executed; the images of Saddam’s execution in Iraq must have made them very uncomfortable indeed. Not only are they mass murderers and criminals, but they are also members of the minority Alawite sect, which vocal Sunni extremists consider to be the worst sort of heresy. So aside from wanting to retain their power and wealth, these people believe that if they let power to slip from their grasp, they will likely be killed.
The alliance with Iran may be at least as much for internal security as for external security.
It’s quite a nasty predicament, and Bashar himself did not create the problem. But there is ample evidence that he has made things much worse.
