  1. SM Thanks! This is really interesting. Egypt and Israel have been doing well. South Africa and Zimbabwe, not so well.

  2. Wow! China is moving fast.
Guess I’d better take some langauges classes.
So I can say “Hello new world super power.” and be understood.

  3. Venezuela is boring, check Zimbabwe, then check google for “mugabe assumed office”, what a coincidence. Surely lot more of similar coincidences can be found. Generally the blue dots look like they are intoxicated.

  4. Man, how high does oil have to go before Saudi Arabia catches a break. Kudos to Kuwait for keeping it together.

But looking at the green dots, I can see why people hate the Prom-Queen Israel.

And the blue dots are really depressing. It’s like the world bank is the kiss of death.

  5. Of course, all the intertribal fighting can’t help.

    Zaphod,
Just wait ’till the next generation comes of age in China – the one without any women, because they were all either infanticided or adopted out to suburban Americans. There’s no telling what will happen then, but may I suggest you learn how to say, “No, the little girl is not for sale” even before “New superpower”.

  6. Take a look at:

    * Lebanon since 1989 (now THAT is an economic recovery)
    * Syria and Iran (and some Lebanese want the turkeys who run these places to control Lebanon?!?)
    * Egypt (average ife span has gained 20 years since 1975; you guys have done SOMETHING right)
    * Ireland (now the richest country per capita in Europe, other than tiny Luxembourg)
    * Israel (why do most Arab businesses and leaders refuse to do business with such a wealthy neighbor that has sought for decades to have peace with them? Are they cracked in the head?)
    * Singapore (If the Palestinians would end the culture of violence and work on building a state instead of wasting time trying to destroy Israel, they could do this too).

Note that the X axis is a log scale, not a linear scale, so the exponential nature of growth is removed from the picture. China has gone from zero personal income to $7,000, while South Korea has gone from $3,000 to $20,000.

  7. Zvi,

“Singapore (If the Palestinians would end the culture of violence and work on building a state instead of wasting time trying to destroy Israel, they could do this too).”

No. They value their honor more than they value their lives or their economic future.

  8. * Singapore (If the Palestinians would end the culture of violence and work on building a state instead of wasting time trying to destroy Israel, they could do this too).

Singapore, eh? And just where will the Palestinians get that extraordinary combo of British-designed institutions and Chinese pragmatism and industriousness? Maybe a better mentor for them can be Malta, take a look at that one’s movement. Despite the fact that it’s “too small to be a viable state”, and has no natural resources- less land area than Gaza! Some people just seem to know how to do well with what they’ve got.

  9. I believe the declining life expectancy in Zimbabwe and South Africa has to do with hiv/Aids.

Try out Tajikistan. Amazing downfall of economy I’d say.
