There are rumors floating around that Nawal el Seadawy, the prominent egyptian femenist, had escaped Egypt to Belgium and then the US after she was charged with dsidain for religions. She denies it, from Belgium, and says that she is just being a visiting professor in the US for the next 6 months or so. She did, however, mention that she was feeling disgusted due to the charges levelled against her and the silence of the egyptian intellegnsia towards them. It's all very weird. Let's just say that since there is a case pending against her, if she didn't escapeEgypt, then she left at a very opprutune timing!

  1. I would say most probably the government leaked that information to her just few days ago… sure they would love to get ride of her in an easy way and avoid the headache from abroad if she was arrested. Monkey my man, nothing is called lucky escape in Egypt!

  2. Mohamed Salah has interviewed her in Al Hayah. The charges were dropped long time ago. She got fed up with the atmosphere in Egypt, that’s all. A person like Nawal El Sa’dawy can never escape. Even in her old age she is never afraid and speaks up her mind freely.

  3. I agree with Om Luji, Nawal would never escape! she has been fighting ignorant mentalities for ages now. She had been to jail before, and described it as a happy time in her life. She no longer fear jail because she tried it.

On a side note, what’s wrong with you Egyptians these days? First you attack Hala Sarhan for talking about Prostitution, then you jail Karim for blogging, and now charging Nawal Al Sadawi!!!!

Sandmonkey, I assume that people like you should unite to do something about that. Why do they insist on destroying every couragous and intellectual Egyptian? You have to stand up for them

  4. […] Egyptian blogger Sandmonkey is wondering about whether writer and feminist Nawal Al Saadawi is ever returning to Egypt here. “There are rumors floating around that Nawal el Seadawy, the prominent egyptian femenist, had escaped Egypt to Belgium and then the US after she was charged with dsidain for religions. She denies it, from Belgium, and says that she is just being a visiting professor in the US for the next 6 months or so,” he writes. Amira Al Hussaini […]

  5. Unlike you Borakos it gives me a little faith that my “old country” hasn’t gone to hell in a handbasket 100% already. Maybe one day the momentum will gather for a movement that should be called People With Brains or PETE (people for the ethical treatment of Egyptians).

On another note I’ve recently read that she’s left Egypt out of disgust for another lawsuit by the man who has too much time on his hands for even for Egypt Nabil El Wahsh. This time claiming that she shold be charged with apostasy for her views; here’s the link where I read this:
