Sadly true. But overall, violence is way down.
It is sad that the only choice is for Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran/Saudi Arabia/Fatah/Islamic Jihad to fight the Jews or fight themselves. But if those are the only two choices available, guess which one I will take.

I think the BBC will probably ignore it. Spoil sports. I love a good BBC-style conspiracy theory. I’d bet good money Robert Fisk will keep a very low profile over at the Indie as well.
The real question is how will Western Muslims blame the Israelis. I’d bet if you went over to ummah.com or one of the other Jihadi sites, they would be blaming Jews for the creation of Shia Islam in the first place. And if you went to a Shia site, they would be blaming Jews for the creation of Sunni Islam.
By the way, came across my second sighting of Iranian Muslims blaming the West for the Islamic Revolution the day before yesterday. All an MI-5 plot it seems. At what point does conspiracy become mental illness?
This infighting only serves to show the west that Islam breeds violence, and it needs to be stopped.
Have you heard the news that Al-Jazeera producer Howayda Taha has been arrested by Egyptian authorities and will be tried for “harming the national image?”
American analysists seem to want to pick a side. I think that’s crazy. America should stay out of it, but make sure both sides have enough bullets to protect themselves. Like I could support the mut’aing Rafidite Persian dogs.

I’m not as sanguine about it as some of you.
It seems to me that, if sunni-shia infighting increases, we’re in for the 3 civil wars that king abdullah predicted – probably more than 3, actually. And who wins that? Persia, which will step in to “protect” its shia brethren. Leading to hegemony for the Islamic Republic.
It would have been great to see the shah gain influence over the region. But ahmadonkeysdong?

America has been selling Egypt F-16s and Abrahams tanks for decades. Time to let them play with them. And I assume that is what the Egyptian government is slowly building up to – they sent soldiers to fight in the Iran-Iraq War after all so it is not new.

Israel better not get too cozy. End of the day they’re still Jews. Even some Berlin Jews survived by working in munitions plants until they too were deported. Apparently, some goals are more important than winning a war.
The Shia-Sunni conflict does not benefit Israel.
Think back before the Shia-Sunni conflict really heated up. The Israelis were working on pulling out of Gaza, and Arab states and some more moderate Arabs were reaching out to Israel. Egypt was beginning to look at HAMAS as a pawn of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Saudis were beginning to get tired of Palestinian whinging and the UAE was looking into investment opportunities in Gaza, thinking about what would happen after Israel left.
Fast forward to the poisonous influence of the Iranian thug-ocracy in the region.
The Shia-Sunni conflict has resulted in new, well-funded Iranian patronage for terrorist groups attacking Israel. It has already resulted in one war of aggression against Israel (Hizballah’s attack and the war that followed). It has resulted in thousands of rockets have been launched at Israeli civilians from Gaza.
Egypt now sees HAMAS as a partial tool of Iran rather than the Muslim Brotherhood, but that simply exchanged one enemy for another. That hasn’t helped Israel. If anything, it has hurt, because Iran isn’t currently working on destabilizing Egypt the way the MB is.
The Shia-Sunni conflict has caused Egypt and Saudi Arabia to declare that they must pursue nuclear *cough* weapons *cough* power programs.
The Shia-Sunni conflict has NOT caused any Sunni state to become Israel’s friend.
And when Sunnis wanted to use Israel to beat up the Shiite Hizballah and stop what they saw as Iranian momentum, they found that Olmert and Peretz are incompetent. So that didn’t help Israeli-Arab relations.
So what exactly should Israel celebrate here?

I have no sympathy for Al Jazeera propagandists.
I still doubt it will happen but this could be the most pointless and destructive war since WWI. It doesn’t look good right now, but it never looks good so why worry?

Egypt is not accusing the MB of killing their diplomats. It is pointing the finger at Iran. I think you will find even Egypt hates Iran.

Rumor has it the Saudis sent a minister to Israel recently for talks. It may be that they are a little concerned about the Iranian program because there is no chance in Hell Saudi or even Egypt could manufacture a bomb on their own (although I assume Saudi Arabia has a Pakistani one or two because they bought those rockets from China). So to preserve a balance they can only make sure Iran does not get one. How? Well perhaps the Israelis will take care of it for them? Rumor has it the Saudis promised to let Israeli jets refuel over Saudi airspace for any attack on Iran’s nuclear program. I think this helps Israel.
And Peres was supposedly in Qatar.
Of course this will be described as the “evil Jewish Zionist influence in the Arab world”, but it is more of a “let’s try not to tear out each others hair, but focuss on the real threat for regional instability: Iran”
Btw, that balloon story in Lebanon is hilarious. Hezbollah lies like if it is written down. Amazing.

I hope you’re right. But I think you may be underestimating persian strength. Hez did pretty well against israel, didn’t they? And iran did pretty well against sadaam hussein. Meanwhile, iran’s continued to build military strength and materiele. Dependent on which we’re talking about, the sunni nations are largely unproven in battle or have proved to be inept (although, admittedly well armed).
Not that I have a positive scenario to propose – not since the lebanon debacle. If persian youth were to overthrow the islamic republic, everything would change. I don’t think it’s going to happen.

Reminds me of what one young Persian I used to work with told me. That the kids there drank and partied quite a bit. The authorities looked the other way, as long as it didn’t get out of hand nor harmful (to the regime). Sounds like maybe they’re letting them some unproductive latitude to keep them docile.

If by “pretty well” you mean that they failed to prevent Israel killing 2,000 Lebanese and inflicting several billions of dollars damage, well yes. If you mean they took advantage of the humanitarian concerns of the IDF (who did not massacre everyone a la Syria), well, then, yes. Theirs was a political, not military, victory.

Pretty well? You mean that with 60 percent of Iraq’s population supporting them, with an economy and population three times larger, with the largest and most sophisticated Army in the Middle East bar Israel’s, the fact that they managed to score a draw is pretty good? By what logical reckoning could any *rational* government have done worse than Iran in the I-I War? They did the almost unique event of uniting the Americans, Russians, French and Chinese behind Saddam. Has that ever happened before? Not even the Khmer Rouge managed that.

In my sad perverse way, having opposed the Iraq War at the time but come to support it since, I think we ought to prop the Iranian regime up. The longer it lasts the better. Islam is not the solution, but to prove that it has to fail, and not only fail, but fail spectacularly. So the longer the regime survives, while posing problems in the short term, the better. When it does I expect a mass conversion to Judaism.
