The Coptic Union does not represent copts. If you go to their website, they claim that the Coptic Orthodox church is heretical and that all who follow have been lost.

This increasing crisis has prompted the formation of new Coptic leadership under Bishop Michael Maximous I, which is necessary because of the rampant infiltration and corruption that has been taking place under the traditional Coptic Patriarch, Shenouda III.
For the past 25 years, the traditional Coptic Church has ignored numerous requests for reform and accountability. The responses by the Church, to such requests, have always been negative and sometimes violent.
The recent breakaway from the traditional Coptic Church is not only the result of the 30-year repression and persecution by the Arab Islamic regime of Egypt against Coptic minorities, but it is also a reaction to the old Church leadership which has done nothing to stop the continued persecution and killing of innocent Copts. Additionally, the traditional Coptic Church has done nothing to help its many victims of Islamic terrorism. In many cases, the top clergy have even played a suspicious role in helping Islamists and governmental authorities, thus intensifying the persecution of the Copts.”

Eh. Nothin’ to worry about. I’d like to think that I’m fairly familiar with most of the relevant Coptic organizations in the diaspora or at the very least familiar with their key players and I’m none too familiar with this group. I’m not sure how much credibility they have (probably very little) considering their ridiculous position on Pope Shenouda.
With all that said, I agree with some of what they say. As an American taxpayer, I can’t help but wonder what the hell is happening to that 2 billion that we send over to Egypt every year?! Besides building up Egypt’s entire military and lining the pockets of the NDP, you gotta wonder why Egypt has moved a millenium backwards in about 20 years, and then when you consider the rabid anti-american sentiment in the country (SM excluded of course), it really looks like a total waste of money.
If Egypt (Muburak) wants continued U.S. aid then they should have to get their shit together because it’s really getting quite out of control.
Personally, for a long time i have been planning my ideological war against these losers.
Call me crazy, but I’m not aware of any definition of “sanctions” that would include cessation of $2 billion a year of largesse.

I agree. I have written my Congress-critters on this very point. I want all US aid to Egypt stopped until it starts treating its citizens in a civilized manner. I highlighted the case of the jailed blogger. Let’s see how far it gets – probably not very : (
Modern Pharaoh you’re wrong, I’m a builder in the US who works occasionally for a Generel Contractor who is an Egyptian Coptic. Coptics are bullied in business in Eygpt by the Muslim majority and murdered when they don’t do as the Muslims say they should. When I say murdered, I mean their children and wives and business associates. Their children are murdered you moron, is that no worse than “the average Egyptian”? He moved out of his country because he feared for his and his famlies life. I’ve had a lot of time to discuss his feelings and the reason he came to the US, he didn’t make it up.

Do you really think that an Egyptian Christian is treated as the equal of an Egyptian muslim?? Because that’s pure unadulterated bullshit! Ya know, I’ve posted on your blog and I think that you are a failry moderate muslim but comments like the one you posted above really makes me question it.
You like to compare “extremists” in all religions even though I see a big difference. And yes, there are crazies in all religions but if you can’t see that Egyptian Copts are treated poorly in Egypt based on their religion then you have a big problem on your hands.
Few things drive me more crazy than when Egyptian muslims deny the difference in treatement between Christians and Muslims in Egypt. Very few things and it’s a countrywide problem (again SM excluded)
